We want to introduce you to the increasingly appreciated meranti wood in Europe. This raw material is sourced from trees growing in the southeastern part of Asia. We import it to the UK primarily from the regions of Malaysia and Indonesia. The specific gravity of this wood species is 500 kg/m³ at a moisture content of 12-15%. We have a constant supply of meranti timber with thicknesses of 26, 33, 52, 60, and 70 mm, as well as three and four-layer meranti edge-glued panels.

Properties and Processing

Exotic meranti wood is often compared to pine because, like pine, it is considered a softwood. However, it differs from our native species in both greater resistance to mechanical damage and resistance to external conditions dictated by our climate. This is primarily due to the density of meranti wood, which is significantly higher than that of pine. Meranti is a diverse wood because the tree it is sourced from comes in numerous variations. It typically has straight and parallel fibers but can be found in a variety of colors, including shades of pinkish-brown, dark brown, yellow, red, and olive. Timber from this wood species is practically free of knots, enhancing its aesthetic value. Meranti wood dries quickly and is easy to work with. It can be easily nailed, screwed, and glued. It also absorbs paint and varnish exceptionally well, making it a favorite material among carpenters.

Applications of Meranti Wood

Thanks to its properties, meranti wood is an excellent material for the production of joinery. Manufacturers use it in the form of edge-glued window and door panels because it offers even greater resistance to cracking and warping in this form. Compared to pine, it also has less shrinkage, which means that window and door frames made from this wood species maintain their original dimensions. Meranti is increasingly used in building facades due to its high resistance to external conditions. It is also an excellent material for the production of veneered furniture and interior furnishings.
